Eight Blessings
A New Look at what Jesus calls us to through the Beatitudes
Matt. 5: 1-11
First Blessing: Having Nothing, Possessing Everything
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Reflection and Conversation: Jesus issues this first blessing as the tension presented of roadblocks that stand in the way of faithful and committed communion with God. Healthy poverty is emptying ourselves and putting aside old hurts, anger, ambitions that keep us from experiencing the presence of God.
The Second Blessing: Joy and compassion born of suffering
Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Reflection and Conversation: Jesus says that we are blessed when we have loved and lived to the point of vulnerability and brokenness for, in such, we will find real joy and comfort in the heart of God.
The Third Blessing: The Balanced Life
Blessed are the meek, for they will possess the earth.
Reflection and Conversation: What significant steps do you think it takes to live a more “balanced life”?
The Fourth Blessing: The Heart that Yearns for God
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Reflection and Conversation: Is there someone you know who models for you a yearning for God—a family member, a spouse, a friend, classmate? How does this impact you?
The Fifth Blessing: Doing Life Together
Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
Reflection and Conversation: Jesus says that when we put ourselves in others’ shoes and make the effort to experience life as they do, we will grow in understanding.
The Sixth Blessing: Seeing Only What We Are Able to See
Blessed are the pure of heart, for they will see God.
Reflection and Conversation: How have major decisions you have made affect your relationship with God and others. Are there decisions in your life that need rethinking or re-forming in order to provide a healthier life? Do you take time to celebrate your life?
The Seventh Blessing: Producing Right Relationships
Blessed are the Peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Reflection and Conversation: Name your life’s most enduring relationships. What relationships in your life need healing?
The Eighth Blessing: The Tension of Choice
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Reflection and Conversation: How is your faith passionate, faithful, and serving of the poor and marginalized, proclaiming a new day for those who suffer.
